Hilde Vandenberghe, category manager renewable energy and HVAC explains some remarkable evolutions in the sector.
Hilde: “The market of appliances focusing on renewable energy and HVAC is already expanding. But the ceiling of evolution was far from being reached. We are now in the middle of it. At Cebeo, this evolution translated into a doubling of operating turnover for this segment in one year. And we expect even more growth when we see what punishing innovations are still to come in Research & Development.”
Where this robust growth is coming from? Hilde: “Legislation and targets on CO2 emissions by 2050 play a big role. We want to become completely independent of fossil fuels. Then there are the high energy costs and the energy transition towards electrification.”
“Residential consumers do need to follow suit. This way, they contribute to the climate goals and save on energy consumption and costs at the same time. Added bonus? Thanks to the purchase of solar panels, customers now also become energy suppliers themselves when they have an energy surplus. This applies to residential customers but equally to companies, schools, office and hospital complexes. This is why ‘steering’ or ‘managing’ energy is going to play such an important role.”
Customers thus become their own energy producer as well as consumer. For this to happen seamlessly, it is important that all our electrical appliances work well together. The key? Efficient communication between all these devices. Without that mutual dialogue, appliances cannot anticipate changing situations.
Hilde illustrates: “We like to put ease of use first. And that means, for example, that we no longer want a separate app for each separate device. It's time for one app that connects everything. And that's where EMS comes in: the Energy Management System.”
Energy monitoring was used much earlier. An EMS system goes further. You get an automatic and real-time insight into your energy consumption and your own power production. Your EMS system controls household and heating appliances, charging stations and storage itself. In doing so, the system takes into account your consumption profile, priorities and the weather forecast.
The result? Hilde: “That's how you increase your own consumption. As a consumer, you will also be prepared for the digital meter and the introduction of the capacity tariff at the beginning of this year. An EMS system will notify the consumer when there is a peak or an irregularity, and some appliances will be switched off in time, without sacrificing comfort. There is also greater ease of use. The EMS system is easy to operate and it is completely tailored to your own choices. Even on a dark day, it should be possible to recharge your electric car for a trip to the cinema.”
Hilde: “Electric driving or e-mobility also plays a big role for our business today. In our product range, this translates into electric charging stations. The more people drive electric, the more important it becomes to control charging stations smartly. That way, you can charge your vehicle efficiently, without overcharging and peak drains, using your own generated solar energy at a cheap rate. Because until the end of 2024, consumers can still count on a tax reduction when buying a smart charging station.”
“By the way, some charging stations in our range are equipped with load balancing functionality. This is a technique where the car's charging speed is matched to other electrical devices in the house. The technique prioritises other devices, using only the available residual capacity to charge the car.”
