These high-quality, robust machine components help engineers to improve the performance of machines and systems, whilst reducing noise pollution and the risk of breakdowns. Four applications illustrate the wide range of possibilities.
It’s no paradox: ACE’s small shock absorbers ensure faster transport movements in the electronics industry by providing optimum deceleration in the final position
Consistent performance characteristics ensure precise damping of inertial forces and, consequently, faster cycle times in industrial applications. These benefits were utilised in an initial case study in which small SC190EUM shock absorbers were integrated into a production line. This approach made it possible to avoid costly modifications to the system, in which electronic components are transported to the assembly line using a linear unit. Here, the cycle time needed to be increased to 3,600 cycles per hour. Given the very high-speed movements, this would not have been possible without optimal, gentle end-of-stroke damping. Using the small shock absorbers from ACE Stoßdämpfer, the production line could be optimised with relatively little effort. This reduced optimisation costs by 50 per cent and cut operating costs by 20 per cent through energy savings, compared with the integration of new pneumatic modules. Furthermore, the noise level of the production line was reduced by 30 dB(A).
Compactly integrated into a small ultrasonic press, ACE’s small shock absorbers act as highly effective braking and safety components in vertical movement.
In the second case, the pneumatically driven movements of a high-performance ultrasonic press had to be started and stopped as quickly and smoothly as possible. For this latter function, small shock absorbers from ACE are used as protective machine components in the vertical movement. After all, even tried-and-tested, well-designed constructions and the best pneumatics are not immune to the consequences of a power cut, operator error or cyber attack. For deceleration and protection in the upper end position, self-adjusting small shock absorbers of the MC75EUM type were selected, and in the lower section, adjustable models of the MA35EUM type. For this application, the engineers ensured that the dimensions of the shock absorbers were comparable to those of the elegant system, in order to simplify integration. This means that both shock absorbers have exactly the same stroke length, and the diameter of the piston rod and the housing are also identical.
ACE’s self-adjusting small shock absorbers are maintenance-free and available with a range of accessories and fittings.
In the third case, involving a universal bottle capper, maintenance work had to be avoided. For this reason, small ACE shock absorbers of the type MC150EUMH are used throughout the system, in both the upper and lower positions. Unlike the other applications, the type of small shock absorber used here is not only larger and therefore stronger, but also features a different sealing technology. This is due to the lateral forces released in the lower end position as a result of a slightly bending arm. To absorb these lateral forces, the shock absorber features a seal with a roller diaphragm. Unlike dampers secured with a conventional seal, the piston rod is not pushed away from the seal here, meaning the service life can reach up to 25 million strokes.
Small shock absorbers from ACE can be easily integrated into linear modules.
The relatively low cost of ACE’s small shock absorbers was also a deciding factor in their use in the fourth application. By using small MC30EUM-type shock absorbers integrated into linear modules, costs are kept within reasonable limits. In many industrial applications, the braking process in pneumatically driven modules is controlled by pneumatic systems. Here, however, the engineers opted for hydraulic deceleration in the end positions, as the one-off investment costs in ACE’s machine components are offset by savings of several thousand euros in running costs. This is partly because, thanks to small shock absorbers, the masses are moved using the smallest possible pneumatic cylinder, thereby enabling the use of smaller valves and air supply units. Consequently, this results in significant compressed air savings, particularly due to the small cylinders, valves and pipework. For example, pneumatic end-position damping requires approximately three to four cubic centimetres of air, which is often compressed to 70 bar. With small shock absorbers, the running costs are negligible, as ACE’s small mechanical components safely and quickly dampen the inertial forces when the end position is reached. An additional advantage of this is a significantly lower load on the machine, as they convert kinetic energy into heat, which is dissipated to the outside.
ACE’s range of small shock absorbers
The components featured in the applications presented here are representative of ACE’s ten product ranges in the field of small shock absorbers. These also include stainless steel damping and braking elements that comply with the strict hygiene regulations in medical technology and the food industry. Given that each series of shock absorbers comprises various types covering virtually the entire force range of handling and automation tasks, it is easy to understand why ACE shock absorbers can be found in millions of industrial installations worldwide. These tried-and-tested high-quality dampers optimise machinery reliably and effectively by decelerating masses quickly and without causing damage. A number of models of these compact, maintenance-free, hydraulic machine components can also be integrated directly into the pneumatic cylinder if required. Not only do they reduce the load there, but they are also suitable for use in linear systems, handling equipment and many other industrial applications. Long service life is ensured by, amongst other things, the innovative sealing technology and the extremely stable shock absorber housing, which is manufactured from a single piece of high-strength alloy steel, as well as the corresponding high-pressure sleeves. In addition to a wide range of accessories, such as guide pins, ACE also offers special threads, special strokes and special designs, tailored to specific requirements.
